A SMALL SPINACH-GREEN JADE VASE GROUP
18TH/19TH CENTURY
The flattened baluster vase has a pair of dragon-scroll handles, and is carved in high relief on one side with a large phoenix supporting a tapering ovoid vase on its back as it stands on openwork lingzhi that also supports a dragon shown descending from the shoulder on the other side, opposite a small phoenix grasping a sprig of lingzhi in its beak. There is an apocryphal Qianlong four-character mark inscribed on the base. The semi-translucent stone has black flecking throughout.

Lot Essay

Compare the related green jade vase and phoenix group (16.3 cm. high) dated to mid Qing, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Zhongguo Yuqi Quanji, vol. 6, Qing, Hebei, 1991, p. 93, no. 143, which also includes a dragon and phoenix as part of the decoration, and is carved in a manner similar to the present group.
