CIRUELO, Pedro (1470-1548). Reprovacion de las supersticiones y hechizerias. Salamanca: Pedro de Castro, 1548. 8° (202 x 140mm). Black letter. Title printed in red and black within a woodcut architectural border, historiated initials. (Title with expert repairs in the margins, spotting, some marginal soiling.) Brown calf by Arias and Sons, panelled and roll-tooled in blind to style, gilt turn-ins and edges. Provenance: an early reader (title inscription, some marginalia and underlining) -- purchased from José Porter, 1952.
A rare edition of Ciruelo's most celebrated work, his treatise on witchcraft, interpretation of dreams, false astrology, divination and superstition. 'The treatment of the subject reveals extraordinary enlightenment in a period clouded by profound and almost universal superstition' (Maggs cat. 495, no 243).
