FIRST EDITION of this richly-illustrated Latin translation, first published in Italian without illustration in 1556. Cartari's work was intended primarily as a mythological manual for artists; its popularity endured through the 17th century. The woodcuts are free copies of those by Zaltieri in the 1571 Venice edition. Mortimer, Harvard French 129.
