SIMEONI, Gabriele (1509-1575). Les illustres observations antiques. Lyon: Jean de Tournes, 1558. 4° (206 x 150 mm). Large woodcut portrait with architectural border on title and numerous woodcuts comprising 61 epitaphs, 35 small woodcut medallion and 15 other illustrations, woodcut head- and tail-pieces and initials. (Occasional light browning.) Red morocco by Marius-Michel, gilt tooling on covers, gilt spine-lettering, turn-ins and edges. Provenance: Joseph Nouvellet (library label) -- P. FIRST EDITION printed before the Italian version. In his dedication the author writes that the text was composed in two languages and that, although published the same year, the present French version was printed first. The 61 epitaphs are mostly printed within borders designed to represent monuments, others are within arabesque borders in several sizes. The 35 small woodcut medallions and the other 15 illustrations have been attributed to Bernard Salomon (Mortimer). The present copy is with the final blank often lacking. FINE WOODCUTS.
