LASTANOSA, Vincencio Juan de. Tratado de la moneda iaquesa y de otras de oro y plata del reyno de Aragón. Zaragoza: 1681. 4° (192 x 132mm). 18 unumbered leaves at end not called for by Brunet, Palau or BNE. Shield of Aragon on title, 9 numbered and one smaller unnumbered engraving by Franisco Artiga, large woodcut opening initial. Extra illustrated with etched portrait of the author laid down on front blank. (One preliminary shaved at bottom margin, several text leaves close shaved, staining to blank margin of final plate, 'Explicacion' leaf repaired at inner margin.) Late 19th-century red morocco with gilt title on front cover, gilt edges. Provenance: T.X.E. (initials on binding) -- purchased from José Porter, 1952.
A HIGHLY VALUED, EARLY ACCOUNT OF SPANISH COINS of the classic and medieval periods. In the view of Salva and Palau it is the rarer of Lastanosa's two books, although the other, on medals, appeared at the much earlier date of 1645. This copy contains a laudatory letter, on 18 leaves, not called for in the bibliographies. This is headed: 'Copia de carta del Dotor Diego Vincencio de Vidania ... al autor,' and refers to his distinguished ancestry and achievements as a courtier and connoisseur of art. The MacCarthy-Beckford copy, sold by Sotheby's for $840 in 1965, contained an extra 10 leaves -- having 28 preliminaries instead of the 18 called for. Brunet III, 868; Goldsmith L-54; Salva II, 3568; Palau VII, 132636.
