Lot Essay

The series of the Four Seasons was first produced in the Bassano workshop in 1574, by Jacopo and his eldest son Francesco (Vienna, Kunsthistorisches Museum), followed by numerous versions by the Bassano studio of this popular series.

The present lot, Spring, derives from the original composition in Vienna (inv. nr. GG_4303), with notable changes; the composition is reversed and there are alterations to the placement of certain figures and anecdotal details.
