AN UNUSUAL EMBROIDERED SATIN CIVIL OFFICIAL'S RANK BADGE OF A GOLDEN PHEASANT, BUZI
19TH CENTURY
Made for a civil official of the second rank, the badge is worked in satin stitch with a golden pheasant (jinji) shown standing on one leg on a rock facing the sun which is backed by a pine tree and set amidst multicolored clouds through which the wufu swoop. The rock is surrounded by nine peaches on one side as well as orchids, peony and lingzhi, all within an outer border of shou medallions in couched gold thread and blue dragons racing amidst further clouds. The design is picked out in shades of coral, green, blue, lavender, yellow and brown.
