A RARE AND VERY LARGE IMPERIAL PAINTED AND GILT-LACQUERED CHEST AND STAND
GUANGXU PERIOD (1875-1908)
Painted on each side in red, white, green and blue with writhing five-clawed dragons confronted around flaming pearls, the domed cover painted in similar fashion below a single front-facing dragon in pursuit of a further flaming pearl painted on the top, all amidst scrolling clouds and reserved on a yellow ground, the chest fitted with thick metal hardware painted in red lacquer with lotus and phoenix scroll reserved on a gilt ground, the corner fittings applied with circular bosses, the square base painted with a border of lappets above a band of addorsed chilong centered on shou medallions, the chest sliding into the separate stand painted with borders of archaistic scroll and key fret above a narrow, thumb-grooved waist and plain aprons and stretchers painted with lotus scroll, the whole raised on short legs of square section terminating in hoof feet
