Part 1: [2], viii, 286 pp. Part 2: [vi], 204pp. the first vol. with title printed in red and black, typeset music (Bound without an engraved portrait, a few minor spots, light browning). IN A FINE LATE-RESTORATION BINDING, possibly for presentation. Contemporary English densely gilt-tooled red morocco to a center and corner design, spine decorated in compartments, black morocco lettering piece, edges gilt (very minor rubbing). Provenance: Acquired from Goodspeed's Book Shop, 1971.
Purcell ranks as the most important English composer between William Byrd and George Friedrich Handel, and this extensive posthumous collection, edited by Purcell's widow, contains songs and arias, many from his popular operas. Volume 1 was dedicated by Purcell's widow to the wife of Lord Robert Howard (1626-1698), a supporter of Dryden. Volume 2 is dedicated by the music publisher Henry Playford (1657-1707) to Charles Montagu, Lord Halifax (1661-1715).
