A VERY FINE SAMMELBAND CONTAINING THREE RARE WORKS OF VON KAISERBERG, in a contemporary German binding.

Geiler von Kaiserberg, the "German Savonarola," preached in the Cathedral of Strassburg. His sermons are an important source of the knowledge of the customs and beliefs of the common people during the pre-Reformation period. His large popularity was due to the fact that he understood the mentality of the people, and his language was easy to understand. Using allegories, parables, stories, proverbs and popular phrases, he mixed his forceful and picturesque language with a good sense of humor.

The first work, Die Emeis (the ants), is the first German-language treatise on witchcraft, and Baldung Grien's woodcuts emphasize bad witch behavior: such as their lasciviousness, their ability to fly, as well as their responsibility for bad weather. Among the illustrations is a celebrated image of a werewolf attacking two men. The second work deals with the sins that go through the mouth: gluttony, blasphemy, swearing, lying, gossip, flattery, nagging, etc., and are accompanied with numerous delightful woodcuts illustrating scenes of eating, drinking and feasting. The third work, the Alphabet, contains one sermon for each letter of the alphabet, and are arranged as branches on the Tree of Life.

The three works are illustrated with woodcuts by the master of Grüninger's workshop, Hans Baldung Grien, and others, including Urs Graf and Daniel Hopfer.
