8o (144 x 92 mm). 104 leaves. 197 woodcuts, including 7 repeats, with cancels pasted over a6v and a8v as usual. (Title restored affecting some text, stained.) Early 19th-century red morocco gilt. Provenance: de Biencourt; Biencourt-Poncins (bookplates); acquired from Florimond Tulkens, 1961.

FIRST EDITION IN FRENCH of Horapallo's work on Egyptian hieroglyphics. Kerver was the first to commission the emblematic woodcuts and to print the Horapollo text in the form of an emblem book. Denis Sauvage attributes the translation to Jean Martin in the dedication to Martin's edition of Alberti, 1553. "The finest of these cuts are by an extremely skillful artist, probably one of the artists of the 1546 Kerver Hypnertomachie, and have been attributed to Jean Cousin or Jean Goujon" (Mortimer). The background of the cut on a4v is a copy, in reverse, of that in Holbein's cut of the Farmer in the Dance of Death series, Lyon, 1538. Mortimer French 314; Praz II, p.82.

(Stained.) FIRST EDITION one of Flamen's earliest dated works. "In a class with Callot's best work" (Hofer). It was frequently reprinted, Landwehr noting editions of 1653, 1658 and 1666, and a posthumous edition of 1672; the plates were also used to illustrate Adrien Gambart's La vie symbolique du bienheureux Francois de Sales, Evesque et Prince de Geneve, published in Paris in 1664.
