August Ungethüm (1864-1911) was the oldest and most gifted son of August Friedrich Ungethüm (1834-1905) whose cabinet making company was the leading producer of furniture in Vienna at the turn of the 20th Century. The younger Ungethüm studied architecture under Otto Wagner and Josef Hoffman placing him in direct contact with the latest designs and the most renowned Viennese artists. Active as a designer in his father's company, Ungethüm created numerous exceptional Viennese Jugendstil furnishings, always working with great precision and the finest materials. He also executed furnishings by such esteemed Viennese designers as Josef Maria Olbrich and Koloman Moser.
