Lot Essay

The romantic spirit of this watercolour calls to mind de Wint's major oil painting, Landscape with a Hermit (Victoria & Albert Museum, London). That picture generally dated to around 1814-15, has been described as a 'highly contrived work', deriving from the works of Salvator Rosa (Smith, op. cit, p. 69).
