Lot Essay

Renowned for his signature 'mosaic' or nériage ceramics, Jean Gerbino was a Sicilian born potter who trained in France in the Vaullauris appellation. The technique of producing these 'mosaic' ceramics took him some fifteen years to perfect and for this he was awarded the Grand Prize in Paris in 1931. The tradition survives and the pottery he established flourishes under the guidance of his granddaughter.
