Lot Essay

Enlightenment was conceived and developed by the Saudi Arabian artist Qaswra Hafez during the early days of the Arab Spring and revolution when radical change was sweeping the Arab world. These days the new generation uses technology and communication to reach
out to one another, connect and collaborate. The amount of information and knowledge available to the masses in the comfort of their own homes regarding this revolution in the region and in essence what started it all, was unprecedented in the Arab world, as were the results.
Close inspection of this intricate work reveals a light bulb where every two lines connect, yet simultaneously the lines in their entirety clearly form the shape of an Islamic pattern. An interconnected LED programming has two settings: the first is conceptual while the second is simply celebrating the beauty in light, patterns and colours. This conceptual setting is celebrated when the bulbs light up right until the matrix is fully illuminated, whereby all the bulbs beat together as one, much in the same way as the voices of the Arab people.
