Lot Essay

Emmanuel Tzanes influenced a dynasty of painters that were active in Crete and Corfu throughout the seventeenth century. The present panel dates to the 1640s-50s. In keeping with the Greek Orthodox depiction of this subject, the three angels represent the Holy Trinity and the apostles appear in the nimbus above the central group.
