Lot Essay

An attribution was proposed to Christian van der Perre (Antwerp fl. 1571-1580) by Klaus Ertz, in a private communication to the vendor. There are eight known versions of this composition, which are usually attributed to the 'Circle of Frans Francken II'. The dating of the respective works has been determined by the year in which the various coins were minted. A comparative work attributed to van der Perre, together with a discussion on the iconography in the picture, is published in Exh. cat., Delights for the Senses. Dutch and Flemish Still-life Paintings from Budapest, Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest and Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, Wisconsin, 1989, p. 151, B30.
