Lot Essay

Miller & Sons were manufacturers of oil lamps from the mid-19th to early 20th century, with workshops at 179 Piccadilly, London. They strived to make improvements to lighting techniques, through patents for methods of wick arrangements, as well as clever designs. Among Miller's other business endeavors was the operation of a shipyard and wharf by Taverner John Miller. Judging by their distinctive design and nautical theme, they were likely contrived for a ship, evidenced by their free swinging candle-arm that was allowed to follow the movement of a swaying ship.
