Lot Essay

The design for 'Bajazzo' was introduced at the Meissen Manufactory in 1919-1923 and is based on the legendary role performed by Vaslav Nijinsky . See J. Rafael, Paul Scheurich 1883-1945, Porzellane für die Meissener Manufaktur, Meissener Manuskripte, Sonderband VIII, Meissen, 1996, p. 45, ill. 12.2 and p. 44, pl. 12.1 for the corresponding costume design by Leon Bakst. The design for Maskentänzer was introduced at the Meissen Manufactory in 1932/33. For a similar example see, Ibid., p. 109, illus. 51.3. This model is thought to have been inpsired by the 16th century drawing by Callot, see pl. 51.2.
