Philip Hofer, from whose library this manuscript comes, founded the Department of Printing and Graphic Arts in the Houghton Library, and was a curator and collector of great zeal and taste. He spent time working in Harvard, in the Spencer Collection of the New York Public Library and in the Morgan Library in New York. He began collecting a wide variety of printed books in 1917, but by 1933 had focused on illustrated and decorated books.
