SAFAVID IRAN, 16TH CENTURY
Arabic and Persian manuscript on paper, 336ff. plus 4 fly-leaves, each folio with 14ll. of elegant naskh, gold and polychrome verse roundels, text panel within gold, blue and green rules, gold and polychrome marginal palmettes and 'ashr markers, the middle bifolium fully illuminated around text written in white clouds reserved against gold ground, the opening with a pair of illuminated shamsas followed by the fully illuminated opening bifolium, following folio with similar gold illuminated margins and heading set inside gold and polychrome strapwork bands, the illumination probably later, in later figural lacquer binding, polychrome lacquer doublures with a floral spray of stylised narcissi
