THE WAZIR PLEADS FOR THE LIFE OF THE YOUNG BANDIT

From the Gulistan of Shaykh Muslih al-Din Sa'di, gouache heightened with gold on paper, the Sultan sits beneath an ornate canopy listening to the pleas of his turbaned Wazir who sits below him in blue robes, the young bandit kneels before the Sultan restrained by a guard in green, further captives in the lower right-hand corner, with three lines of elegant nasta'liq in clouds reserved against gold ground, laid down on wide green margins with gold floral decoration, reverse with 12ll. of black nasta'liq and a quotation from the Qur'an in red, heading in blue, catchword, in margins decorated with gold arabesque
