Paris: Charles Angot, 1683. Vignette to title page, two initial letters, four head- and two tail-pieces. (Occasional light spotting and toning.) Eighteenth-century sang-de-boeuf calf, triple rule gilt border to boards, spine richly gilt in compartments, all edges gilt (expertly recased, some wear to boards, corners very slightly bumped). Provenance: Charles de Lorraine, his signature in ink to the title-page. [Bound with:] FRANCOIS PALLU Relation abregée des mission et des voyages des évêsques françois. Paris: Charles Angot, 1682. Vignette to title-page, two head-pieces and one initial letter. (Occasional light spotting.)
THIRD AND SECOND EDITIONS OF THE FIRST FRENCH ACCOUNTS OF SIAM. Father de Bourges was a member of the first Catholic mission to Siam, arriving with his two fellow missionaries in 1662. Since Siam was tolerant of other religions it became a safe haven for the missionaries to establish themselves, and in 1664 a second group led by Monseigneur Pallu joined the fathers in Siam after a two-year journey overland. Cordier Sinica, 827.
