Lot Essay

The view ranges from the Jardine Matheson godowns at East Point (with Jardine's flag flying) on the far left to the recently erected Signalling Station on the Peak (1861) upper right. The landmarks include St John's Cathedral, Head Quarter House beyond to its right, with its flagstaff, and among the establishments lining the harbour, the P & O hong flying its quartered flag. The western shipping in the harbour includes American, British, Danish and Dutch vessels.
