Lot Essay

Statues of Isis and Nephthys mourning their brother Osiris were often found in tombs of the late 1st Millennium B.C. to emphasise the deceased's connection with the god. They were usually depicted in traditional gestures of lamentation for the dead with hands raised to their heads.
For similar figures in Acacia wood, cf. ac. no. EA60901 in The British Museum, London.
