Lot Essay

The daughter of John Arderne, of Penarlag, Flintshire, Wales, the sitter married Thomas Marbury, of Marbury, Cheshire. For a portrait of the sitter's husband see the previous lot.
The elaborate cutwork and lace on the collar and cuffs of the sitter's costume are similar to a handkerchief in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London (inventory number 484-1903), while the spectacular cap is similar to one worn by Elizabeth, Lady Carey of c. 1620 (The Suffolk Collection, English Heritage).
