A RARE MOTTLED JADE SQUARE 'DRAGON' SEAL
YUAN DYNASTY, 13TH/14TH CENTURY
The seal is finely carved on the top with a crouching dragon, the body is pierced with an aperture through the centre, and the base is deeply and crisply carved with a lanca character. The stone is of a cloudy celadon tone with some dark russet and caramel inclusions.

Lot Essay

A square seal from the Yuan dynasty similarly carved with a dragon on the top was included in the exhibition Chinese Jade Throughout the Ages, jointly-organised by The Arts Council of Great Britain and The Oriental Ceramic Society, 1 May - 22 June 1975, Victoria & Albert Museum, no.341.
