A PAIR OF HARDWOOD 'SOUTHERN OFFICIAL'S HAT' ARMCHAIRS, NANGUANMAOYI

The stepped top rail of each chair is supported on rear posts of square section, which extend downwards to form the back legs. The top sections of the splats are carved in openwork with stylised foliage, with the central sections shaped as plain rectangular panels and the lower sections enclosing a curved apron. The curved arm rails are supported by front posts, above rectangular frames enclosing rattan seats. The legs are of square section and are joined by stretchers and foot rests.
