Lot Essay

This monumental pair of candelabra by Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751-1843), maître fondeur-ciseleur in 1772, is related to a candelabrum executed by him, which is now in the Grand Trianon, Versailles (ill. in H. Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol. I, p. 393, fig. 5.17.13). Amongst related examples, a pair was sold from The Royal House of Hanover, Schloss Marienburg, Sotheby's house sale, 5-15 October 2005, lot 1525; whilst a further pair signed by Thomire was sold anonymously, Christie's, New York, 20 May 2008, lot 370 ($73,000).
