Lot Essay

The shape of this unusual vase is strongly influenced by a Jingdezhen Chinese shape of around 1720, for an example see Oriental Ceramic Society, Porcelain for Palaces: The Fashion for Japan in Europe, 1650-1750 (London, 1990), p.241, no.264. Its stylised painting seems to have influenced the English Bow factory as can be seen in a blue and white vase in the Freeman Collection published Anton Gabszewicz, Bow Porcelain, (London, 1982), p.61.
