Lot Essay

Claes Oldenburg created the drawing on the occasion of a seminal two-part exhibition "New Forms-New Media; New Media-New Forms in Painting and Sculpture version II" at the Martha Jackson Gallery in June and September-October 1960. The exhibition featured the works by Dada artists such as Hans Arp and Kurt Schwitters, and works by "neo-Dadaists" which was the label given to the new crop of artists like Claes Oldenburg, Jasper Johns, and Robert Rauschenberg. The exhibition eschewed conventional painting and sculpture and focused on constructions and assemblages.
