Lot Essay

The present work was executed 20 August 1899 on a train from St Petersburg. Repin had set off for the Caucasus, accompanied by Aleksandr Zhirkevich, in search of inspiration.

Vladimir Gilyarovsky, commonly known as 'Uncle Giliai', was one of the most famous journalists in Russia of his time. Widely admired, he counted Anton Chekhov, Aleksandr Blok and Ivan Bunin amongst his friends. Repin had previously used Gilyarovsky in a version of his famous Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks, no doubt in part due to Gilyarovsky's Cossack ancestry.

We would like to thank Liudmila Andrushchenko, Senior Researcher at the Ilya E. Repin Estate-Museum 'Penates' for her assistance in cataloguing this work.
