Lot Essay

Ilya Repin spent the summer of 1870 travelling along the Volga making numerous preparatory drawings and paintings for his subsequent Barge Haulers on the Volga (1870-1873, State Russian Museum, St Petersburg). On 15 June 1870 he arrived in Stavropol-Samarskii, a town on the Volga which no longer exists. The present work was executed the day after he arrived.
