Lot Essay

This watercolour relates to an oil, Zhdut (They wait), painted by Roerich in 1900 and formerly in the collection of G. Fuchs. A later variation of the composition, painted in 1901, was subsequently destroyed and is known only from a reproduction (see Iu. Baltrushaitis et al., Rerikh, Petrograd, 1916, p. 24).

We would like to thank Gvido Trepsa, Senior Researcher at the Nicholas Roerich Museum, New York for his assistance in cataloguing the present work.
