4 volumes, 4° (365 x 273mm). Plates throughout, including 3 etchings, some lithographs printed in colours, of which 2 folding, some mounted, numerous illustrations throughout, some coloured, after Vasnetsov, Samokish, Lebedev, Repin, Riabushkin, Roubaud, Surikov, Benois, Lanseré, Pasternak, Stepanov, Serov and others. (Some spotting and some browning, mostly in vols 2 and 3, a few plates in vol. 2 with mostly marginal dampstain, one loose plate in vol. 4.) Original coloured leather by Kirkhner, original silver corner-pieces mounted on the upper sides of vols 1-3 as issued, the mounts of two volumes with silver marks, all vols with the original coloured cloth dust-jackets, sides and spine printed in various colours and gilt, edges gilt, endpapers printed in brown and gilt, red silk placemarks in vols 1, 2 and 4 (extremities rubbed and lightly faded, some pastedowns lifting slightly, upper side of vol. 1 with light spotting, vol. 2 with some staining on the sides and one corner slightly bent, the dust-jackets with some wear at the extremities, placemarks worn, without embroidered placemark found in some copies of vol. 3). FIRST EDITIONS. THE RARE DELUXE ISSUE IN FULL LEATHER WITH THE SILVER CORNER PIECES AND THE ORIGINAL DUST-JACKETS. The Imperial Hunt in Russia is 'a masterpiece of the Russian printing industry of the early 20th century', and 'a fundamental description of Russian mores and customs related to various types of hunting, ranging from pastime to big-game shooting and trapping' (Vengerov). 'These four volumes are now rarely found as a set' (Fekula). From the collection of Peter Malevsky Malevitch, Colonel in the Preobrazhenskii Regiment, and historian of Russia. The first edition of the first two volumes consisted of 400 numbered copies only; volumes I, II, and III are numbered 135, 164 and 68, respectively. Burtsev 156; Fekula 2575; Thiébaud 217 ('a luxurious publication of remarkable typographic execution'); Vengerov, Staraia Russkaia Kniga 37. (4)
