Lot Essay

The present lot relates to the monumental bronze sculpture executed in 1588 by Hubert Gerhard for the façade of the Michaelskirche, Munich, after a design by Friedrich Sustris. It is also comparable to an engraving of 1597 by Lukas Kilian after a drawing by Peter Candid (see B. Volk-Knüttel, Pieter Candid (um 1538-1628): Gemälde - Zeichnungen - Druckgraphik, Berlin, 2010, nos. D23 and Z29), but is unique in several details, such as the feet and legs of the Devil.
