Lot Essay

We are grateful to Professor Nicola Spinosa for confirming the attribution after firsthand inspection. Professor Spinosa dates the painting to the artist's early years in Naples, when he was very close to Aniello Falcone (1607-1656). He compares it with a battle scene, signed and dated 1637, in a private collection, in Paris (exhibited Naples, Museo di Capodimonte, Salvator Rosa tra mito e magia, 18 April-29 June 2008, p. 190, no. 53).
