AN ATTIC BLACK-FIGURED COLUMN-KRATER
CIRCA 560-550 B.C.
One side centered by a seated sphinx facing right, a youth before her, possibly Oedipus, nude but for a chlamys over his right arm, a mantled youth to the left; the other side with a running winged goddess, possibly Nike, in the knielauf position, flanked by male onlookers, each in an ankle-length patterned himation; double bands of ivy and berries framing the scenes, alternating red and black tongues above, rays above the foot, ivy and berries on the exterior of the rim, wavy lines on the upper surface of the rim, swans with outspread wings on the handle-plates; details in added white and red
