Lot Essay
The distinctive fluted pedestal on this table relates to the Neoclassical designs and drawings of Henry Holland and his pupil, Charles Heathcote Tatham. A table supplied by them to the library at Woburn Abbey with this pedestal is illustrated in R. Edwards "Patrons of Taste and Sensibility," Apollo, 1965, pl.14. Further related tables were supplied to Samuel Whitbread for Southill Park, Bedfordshire, and are thought to be part of the furniture supplied by Tatham and his partner, William Marsh. A closely related center table was sold from the Property of Two Ducal Collections, Woburn Abbey, Bedford, at Christie's House Sale, 20-21 September 2004, lot 1150.
