Lot Essay

These delicate, jewel-like candelabra, with their detailed floral swags and finely chased foliage, were probably made in Vienna, although little research has been done on Austrian ormolu. They share similar characteristics such as urn-form supports and detailed beading to a pair of candelabra possibly commissioned by Queen Carolina of Naples and Sicily, sold Christie's, London 12 December 2007, lot 130 (£24,500). The floral swags also closely relate to the leg mounts on an Austrian marquetry table of the same period sold Christie's, New York, 11 December 2003, lot 90.
