Lot Essay
This pair of chenets is based on a model executed in 1786 by Philippe Thomire for the king's bedroom at Versailles (4888) illustrated H. Ottomeyer and P. Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol. I, p. 277, fig. 4.11.17. The inspiration for the model is likely an Egyptian sphinx at the Villa Borghese in Rome, a drawing of which by William Chambers is in the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum (HA3692, 42) illustrated op cit., pg. 277. A similar model with a different base was sold Palais Abbatial de Royaumont; Christie's, Paris, 19-21 September, 2011, lot 35 (20,000 EUR).
