In April 1939, Fu Baoshi and his family moved to Sichuan and lived in a simple cottage at Jingangpo in the rural part of Chongqing. As a result of his frequent travels in the mountains, Fu developed a fondness for the unique features of Sichuan landscapes. Subsequently, he started to create a series of landscape paintings with a distinctive style that foretold his achievement of establishing of Chinese modern landscape paintings.
Carrying the Qin into the Mountains was a gift from the artist to Dr. Guy Latouche, the Medical Captain of the French military force. From the end of 1944 to July 1949, Dr. Latouche stationed in China to reactivate the abandoned French hospital during the war. In 2004, this painting was offered for sale by the Latouche family and was acquired by the current owner at an auction in Paris.
The composition of this painting is very similar to Fu Baoshi's Landscape of the Idea of Du Mu's Poem, dated 1944 and sold in our Fine 19th and 20th Century Chinese Paintings sale (Lot 281).
