This relatively small puppet would have been part of a larger superstructure of masks worn in the Ségou region in the didactic Sogow masquerade. The puppets are called Maani (maa - human beings and ni - the diminutive of: little people) (Arnoldi in Colleyn (ed.), pp 77-93) See Christie's, Paris, 10 June 2008 lot 12 for a related puppet formerly in the Meulendijk Collection and published in Wassing, African Art, Amsterdam, 1968, p.221, n.24. This work can be seen in a 1975 photo of the Bartos's New York apartment, prominently placed in their living room.

Lot Essay

Cette marionnette, de taille relativement petite, aurait fait partie d'un ensemble plus vaste de masques portés dans la région de Ségou lors de la cérémonie de Sogow. Les marionettes sont appelées Maani (maa - être humain et ni - le diminutif de: petits êtres). Voir Christie, Paris, le 10 juin 2008 lot 12, pour une marionnette comparable autrefois dans la collection Meulendijk et parue dans Wassing, Art africain, Amsterdam, 1968, p.221, n.24.
Cette oeuvre est visible sur une photo prise en 1975 de l'appartement des Bartos à New York, où elle trône dans le salon.
