Lot Essay

The present brushpot is superbly carved and would have been an important addition to the desk of a successful scholar or official. It is replete with auspicious symbolism. On the front of the brushpot, two deers are resting next to a pavilion. The deer (lu) is a pun for 'road' (lu), and two deers stand for 'all roads', or for all things going smoothly. They are represented next to lingzhi and pine trees. All together they convey wishes of immortality and longevity.
