Lot Essay

Minton produced a service of this design, painted by Antonin Boullemier, to commemorate the marriage of HRH Prince Alfred, The Duke of Edinburgh, to Marie Alexandrovna, daughter of Alexander II, Emperor of Russian, on 23 January 1874. This service comprised 104 pieces, including fifty dessert plates. The presence of the T. Goode & Co. retailers mark on this lot suggests that it is a period replica rather than a part of the original service.

See the example illustrated by Joan Jones, Minton, The First Two Hundred Years of Design & Production, (Shrewsbury, 1993), p. 69.
