Lot Essay

A French ship portraitist working in Le Havre during the first half of the 19th century, Montardier was one of the earliest exponents of ship portraiture. Although very little is recorded of him, his work is represented in the collection of The Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, Massachusetts.
