MOUNT EDEN VINEYARDS
It's not often a winery begins life as the bi-product of a divorce settlement. As the larger of two vineyard parcels, Mount Eden was established when Martin Ray was wrestled by investors for control of his eponymous winery. Overlooking the Santa Clara Valley basin from steep mountainside vineyards he renamed his court settlement Mount Eden Vineyards. The lower portion on the hillside continued on as Martin Ray Vineyards. Since 1972, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir (planted in 1943) and Cabernet Sauvignon have been the hallmark of the vineyard's highest elevations, 1,800 to 2,000 ft. The high quality crop produced from these non-irrigated vines on thin mountain soils have always been harvested in small quantities. The Mount Eden style of Chardonnay is bold and rich, 1990, 1991 and 1993 are among their very best. Their old vine Cabernets (designated as such in 1988) is deep, briary and bold; 1990 is among one of their finest vintages produced.
