South India, probably Pondicherry, mid-19th century
The procession carries a statue of Christ, the church and a wooden tower in the background, the lower edge inscribed "Résurrection du Christ, le dimanche de Paques" and inscribed "35" in the lower left-hand corner; the procession celebrates the Assumption and carries statues of the Virgin Mary in portable shrines, the lower edge inscribed "Fête chretienne d'asiancoupon (?), procession de la vierge, giroles entourés de fleurs " and inscribed "36" in the lower left-hand corner; the palanquin drawn by bullocks, a scarce landscape with hilltops and palm trees in the background, the lower edge inscribed "Gound Bandi - Autre voiture Malabar" and inscribed "106" in the lower left-hand corner
