The bats-wing paterae cover with leaf-clasped cone finial, the fluted ovoid body on waisted socle and square secton base with impressed stamp 'COADE LAMBETH 1795'

Lot Essay

The present lot is a variation on two related designs from the Etchings of Coade's Artificial Stone Manufactory (No.49 and No.94) These fluted vases and the numerous variations on the same theme were amongst the most popular models from the factory. The parapit of Mrs Coade's house, Belmont, at Lyme Regis, Dorset is adorned with six of this design.
A pair of stamped 'Coade Stone' finials of almost identical design were sold, The Michael Roberts Collection of Garden Ornaments, Christie's, Ashurst, Kent, 27 September 2004, lot 278 (£35,850, inc.).
