HANDSOME COPY of the third Giolito edition of Dolce's translation of the Metamorphoses. The superb woodcuts were designed specifically for Dolce's work and Giolito's artist chose a number of subjects not illustrated in previous editions of Ovid. The world map names not only the Straits of Magellan but shows North America as Nueva Hispania. Brunet II, 789; cf. Shirley The Mapping of the World, 95; cf. Mortimer Harvard Italian, 342; cf. Adams O-508 (second edition).
